I watched Scratch yesterday, after advising people should watch it when it was on TV on Wednesday. It is a fascinating insight into the evolution of “Turntableism” and Hip-Hop in general. I think the most amusing part must have been how Mix Master Mike seems convinced he talks to aliens through scratching and he once saw a flaying saucer land outside his house when he was practicing, and this belief seems to rub off on a few of the other people he works with (Qbert talks about Jupiter a lot).
DJ Shadow giving the tour of the basement of the shop he goes digging in (the unpstairs is the one on the front cover of Endtroducing) is riveting. You can hardly believe there is so much vinyl in one place. He talks about how humbling it is to think that all of the people who’s records are stacked up there collecting dust once believed they were the best at what they did, and that as someone who made records out of this stuff, then one day you’ll be in their too, you have to respect that. He then reminisces about the record he found a petrified bat under…
Anyone who has any interest in this type of music really must watch this, your missing out if you don’t. It is available on DVD but appears to be Region 1 only.
Edit: Forgot to mention that Cut Chemist looks and sounds like Willy Wonka, another great bonus. (22.09.03)
