The phenomenon of hikikomori: "The word means simply social withdrawal and, in its early stages at least, the condition is as banal as a teenage sulk ... True social withdrawal is not just a passing phase. The most extreme case known ... is a man of 53 who has been living in his room for 30 years."
Apparently a uniquely Japanese phenomenon but I think you'll find examples of this everywhere, albeit on a smaller scale.
