Gig Review: Shitmat, Exile & Chevron @ Monkey Knife Fight, Timbuk2, Bristol, 09.04.05

Monkey Knife Fight have been putting on some big name acts in Bristol over the last few months but this is the first of their gigs I've made it to. And the last time I was in this venue it was an Italian restaurant. Quite a lot has changed since. The building is a converted wine cellar with rooms and corridors jetting at angles all over the place. It makes this a great place for a multi-room gig, with two dancefloors and plenty of chill-out space, although neither of the main rooms is very big so could be a problem for bigger acts.

The evening in the back room started off with Shitmat's Wedding Reception Mix (every pop hit you could ever imagine all mashed in together) playing before the live music started. A generic drum and bass act with some added live drumming played an uninspiring set early on. Chevron was the first of the Mu acts to take the stage, playing on of his more breaks based sets interspersed with some nice ambience. The audience seemed to be predominantly Saturday night drinkers rather than the usual electronica crowed but it was great to see people really get into it. By the time Exile was playing his dancefloor drum and bass set, with more of the comedy voiceovers than I'd heard before which are always the highlights of his live sets, I heard people discussing how amazing the music was and how they’d called friends to tell them to get down here but they couldn't get in.

There was a real buzz around the place about Shitmat too, as if he was the only artist most of these their had heard of. He was really about as big a name as you could put on there, the live room was packed with people craning their necks to see. Absolute carnage ensued in the mosh pit at the front, with people flying all over the place in a way that would put many metal gigs to shame. I've yet to see crowd surfing at an electronic gig but it can't be that far off.

Roll on May, when Venetian Snares will be gracing the venue (along with C64, Headphobe & Defazed, Parasite and Punksi). I just don't know how enough people are going to get in.
