Juana Molina – Salvese Quien Pueda remix 12" (Domino)
Wow. Now this is interesting. Another feat for Spanish folk music's inroads into "Folktronica" (Molina hails from Buenos Aires, Argentina). Her voice to me is reminiscent of Björks quieter, more reflective moments but without the growl behind it. There are beautiful melodies and harmonies layered here along with some great beat-box like breathy percussion, and in places scat jazz influences. This is more densely layered than a lot of folktronica without ever descending into noise or drones. It's all very well balanced, with a wide variety of instrumentation and great use of space. It also includes some great synth sounds, including some cheeky humour provided by what I think is synthesized animal noises, and bits of ping-pong percussion sounds. There is also a huge variety of rhythms used, changing throughout the tunes, never lurching uncomfortable but always evolving gracefully. A delicately fascinating piece of music and two equally interesting remixes (by Four Tet). A great record well worth getting your hands on.
Salvese Quien Pueda is released on Domino on 16.05.05

Lawrence – Swap (Novamute)
Ambient techno from Lawernce (Peter M. Kersten), which is fairly pleasant as a chunk of coffee table techno but quite generic in its approach to the genre. The building synth parts in the opening Carsten Jost Remix sound nicely filmic and epic, but the effect is quickly lost when the boring techno percussion parts start to build. The original mix suffers from the same problems as far as percussion is concerned but at least it is more interesting from a synth lead line point of view. The closing 11 min long Serafin Remix just goes on and on forever and never does anything of note. Fine if you want some background music with repetitive beats, but not of interest otherwise.
Swap is released on novamute on 02.05.05
