Gig Review: Monsters of Mash-up & Altern8 @ Level, Bristol, 27.05.05

This gig was a bit of a last minute panic booking for the Monsters of Mash-up tour and as such the three of them were squeezed into a one an a quarter hour microcosm of the line up, leaving the regular DJs two and a half hours between them. Seems pretty stingy to me, but them I'm biased cus I'm only here for the mash-up. Anyway, the local guys play some old skool rave anthems (eg Out of Space etc) and generally crank the levels up and down and sound a bit ropey, before old skool hardcore giants from 1991, Altern8, take to the decks. No gas masks!? No chemical warfare suits? What a disappointment. More old skool rave anthems ensue, including Out of Space (again!), only with extra "Altern8" samples dropped over it with generally dodgy timing. Nothing else of interest to report there, although it's quite amusing to browse the Mask Hysteria forum and read the posts from all the people who have missed the last ten years of music development.

The Monsters of Mash up all play laptop sets. Bong Ra is first up with his dread shaking ragga jungle shenanigans, which as usual includes other peoples tunes as well as his own. Parasite gets particularly excited when his Strong Like a Lion gets dropped (see photo). A couple of gabba tunes finish off the 25 minute set. Enduser then plays a 20 minute jungle set, which keeps the pace up but fails to raise the bar any higher, leaving half and hour for Shitmat, who rocks it as always. This is the only real mash-up of the evening, with the usual mix of jungle rhythms, the Thomas the Tank Engine theme, gabba beats, etc. A huge section of the crowd seem to be here for this alone, with calls of, "We love you, Shitmat!" filling every space in the music. The girl with Shitmat written across her back in biro was particularly amusing (and cute). A massive disappointment there wasn't more of it, and a bit of a rip off at six quid, but still an ok show.
