Gig review: Venetian Snares & c64 @ Timbuk2, Bristol, 04.05.05
Despite my numerous Venetian Snares live reviews, this was only his second Bristol gig, the last being the one Gusset played at back in 2002. DJ Mewkin started off the proceedings with a very noisy breakcore set and the inspired addition of Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues. The set wasn’t exactly smoothly mixed unfortunately but did include some choice tunes.
First live act, who I presume was Maiof, provided some intense noise-core and gabba. It built nicely with hums and clicks evolving into throbbing bass, and ended well with a similar thrashing of heavily distorted throbbing bass. The beats in the middle weren't as interesting as I would have liked but the shear intensity of it set the scene nicely.
Punksi DJed a heavily guitar based punk and grindcore set, which somehow was not at all out of place, nice work. Headphobe and Defazed did their head to head live set, and it was good to see them doing something lighter on the gabba and heavier on the fucked up beats compared to a lot of their sets.
The back room was pretty packed by the time dross:tik dead honcho, c64 came to play his twisted dnb/breakcore set. Quality stuff that really got people moving. The venue had to open an overspill room by this time as everybody tried to cram into the back room, whilst the second DJ room at the front of the venue sat almost dormant, only a few people waiting at the bar listening to what was going on in there.
Venetian Snares came on with 1hr20 left until closing, and filled it. I've never seen him do a set that long before. It all started quite civilised with a long build-up of string parts from Rossz Csillag Alatt Született before launching into the amen assault of was effectively a Rossz Csillag megamix. A similar breakneck workout of Doll Doll Doll tracks followed, the crowd reaction to Befriend A Child Killer being near insanity. More of a gabba tip followed, with Winnipeg material and classics like the remix of Doormouse's Skelechairs, The Most Sedistic (the Necro Bill one), Kill Bill sampling Where's Bill, edited highlights of Chocolate Wheelchair etc. There were a few track I didn't recognise too, which I would guess were from the upcoming Meathole album.
It all sounded very dark, very fast, and very intense. A great show, with an impressive mosh-pit, and some great spazzy dancing. It all ended with an encore of huge distorted clattering screeching noise, as any great set does. I'd been looking forward to this for weeks and it lived up to my expectations. Now I can't wait for the London show on the 20th!
