Gig review: M.Z.O., Frog Pocket & D'Kat @ Noise Club, The Croft, Bristol, 27.08.05
I feel privileged to have seen the UK debut gig of our Death$ucker labelmates Monster Zoku Onsomb (M.Z.O.), fittingly, at the triumphant return (after five years!) of Noise Club.
Another of our labelmates, D'Kat, opened the evening with a frenetic set of booty shaking cut-ups. Plenty of spazzy beats and some great bass got the (admittedly quite small) crowd dancing. Plenty of tracks from his new Compulsive Metaphysics release on Tooth & Claw, including his classic political mash-ups, the theme from Rainbow, and the 2004 rework of his Happy Days theme mash-up.
Our flu ridden, Benylin swigging friend Frog Pocket followed. Unfortunately his fiddle heavy folktronica wasn't to the liking of some, and the crowd dispersed a little. By the time he got to the lolly throwing and his acidy Moon Mountain Of The Fords material the crowd had returned and were dancing again. The usual skipping CD player and frantic rewiring of guitar pedals all added to the charm as usual. Good fun.
M.Z.O. finished off the evening with 45mins of pure breakcore carnage, and a much larger crowd that suddenly appeared from nowhere. Opening with music man Kiki Ill playing Destroy All Monsters, as Miss P.Leisure, Seņor Tasty Taste, and Sharkey Baba (not Lulu Deluxe, as previously stated, thanks for the correction Tara), joined the stage. The sound of three vocalists singing and shouting along with the tunes gave it a great impact, and as for the spectacle, well, just look at the photos.
Kiki Ill's mimed performance of Valentines was hilarious, and the bass in that track is amazing. Then Seņor Tasty Taste poured a good portion of a bottle of Tequila down the audience's throats during the track of the same name.
It's important to realise that the costumes and the choreographed antics are not intended to cover inadequacies elsewhere, and in no way distract from the music. There was not a weak track played. What the antics do do, is allow the audience to forget their inhibitions. This is not about being cool. It's about having fun. I, like everyone else, danced like a loon throughout. A brilliant performance and awe inspiring stuff. I just hope they return to the UK soon, and hopefully to a venue with a projector next time, as the fully synced visuals they normally perform with can only add to the experience.
