Mercury Prize
I seem to have let the Mercury Music Prize slip by completely without comment this year, which is particularly odd as for the first time I know people involved with one of the nominated albums, and I never got round to congratulating them. The shame.
The Polar Bear album, Held on the Tips of Fingers, ("jazz made by people who obviously listen to a lot of electronic music," to paraphrase several of reviewers) features contributions from John "Leafcutter John" Burton (who we've gigged with) and was produced by our mate, from the Adverse Camber collective, Paul Richardson. So well done guys! Congratulations on getting as far as you did and bringing some great exposure and life to the genre.
Its a little sad that so many people didn't do enough research to be able to say more about it. "HMV, Virgin and Borders all have prominent Mercury Prize displays and none of them feature Polar Bear" Fopp were carrying it last week, but alas, it has now gone. A quick Froogle will show you where you can still pick it up.
As you probably know, Antony and the Johnsons scooped the prize in the end. Now, that's someone I havent heard of, but I'm not a music journalist so I don't feel I should have. The reports sound intriguing though, so I may have to check this out.
I particularly like this wtf? inducing closing statement to the channel 4 story: "Hegarty often appears on stage with a Japanese hermaphrodite mathematician called Julia." Now, appearing on stage with a Japanese hermaphrodite. OK. So far, so very Lou Reed. But a mathematician? Japanese, hermaphrodite, or otherwise just having a mathematician on stage with you is a pretty unusual concept. I'm starting to like the guy. Go maths!
