Gig Review: DJ /Rupture, 0=0, Atki2 @ Monkey Knife Fight, Timbuk2, 02.11.05

Not as busy as some of their previous shows, but still an amazing turn out for a Wednesday night. The second room got kicking really early thanks to a brilliant ragga jungle DJ set from Ironside. The main room didn't do as well as it was much quieter and was playing 70s funk/soul records at the start of the night. Atki2 played a great grim(e) set, one hour almost entirely of his solo material but supplemented only by two Monkey Steak tracks at the remix DJ Pinch did for him. The set was underappreciated by the crowd, which was a great shame as it rocked. When 0=0 appeared the level suddenly got much, much louder. That combined with the more familiar jungle riddims got peoples interest pretty quick and the dance floor quickly filled up. The set was good, although I felt there were a couple of weaker tracks in the middle that caused it to flag a little. Finally DJ /Rupture took to the booth and kept the crowd moving with his signature mix of hip-hop, jungle, breakcore and grime, mixed in a way no one else can. Great fun, and another great Monkey Knife Fight. The next one is on Nov 17th with Knifehandchop.

Yeah, I realised that after I posted the review, when Sam Akti2 said he thought it was better than Jason's later set. Didn't do anything for me though. I'm obviously not a soul man, and James Brown can run and jump if you ask me (which you didn't).
