Gig Review: Stewart Lee: 90s Comedian @ The Tobacco Factory, Bristol, 06.11.05

Brilliant stand-up from Stewart Lee last night. His one time comedy partner Richard Herring was up the road at the Comedy Box the previous night, and it would have been interesting to see them back to back, but unfortunately I couldn't make it to Rich's set. (His pre-Edinburgh set at Richmond Spring showed great promise)

Stu provided an excellently complied set of ramblings that all interlinked beautifully. There were four or five walkouts when he got the material about masturbating over dead relatives (which sounds worse than it was taken out of context like that). He did spend quite a lot of time talking about vomit, and that does makes me quite queasy, but in the larger context in was defiantly worth while. In the end we find the point was a thought provoking story about censorship, but morals don't get in the way of the humour here. Great stuff, cleverly put together and expertly delivered. Definitely worth getting to if you can.

I do have a quick gripe about the Tobacco Factory though. I was sat on the back row underneath the fan opening. There was no acoustic baffle on the fan, just an open 12” hole over looking north-street, so I could hear every car that passed and every firework going off, which made it very difficult to hear. It was also very hot. The fan was completely ineffectual as it was pulling air into the room at high level. Shouldn’t it be pulling cold air in at low level and expelling the warm air at high level? Anyway, that’s enough moaning about building services, I really must stop working when I go out in the evening.

The Comedy Box has just launched a new forum btw.

I live right around the corner from T.T.F... how odd. Like two ships in the night are bloggers.
