:: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 :: Believe it or not, it was 10 years ago today that a young, beardless, three-piece, partially female, Gusset first took to the stage. The venue was the newly opened Fiddlers Arms, a converted prison building in the backstreets of Bedminster, south Bristol. The brilliant poster had been lovingly handcrafted by Clayton Hickman. We'd booked all of our mates in bands to play too, thus guaranteed that almost everyone we knew would come along. Even our vocalist Helen's boyfriend's psychopathic ex turned up to glass him in the middle of our set. Abuse was hurled from the stage as well as at it. An ambulance was called. A band who blagged their way onto the line up but who couldn't handle their drink started to throw glass around outside. The owners eventually told me to pull the plug on the night or else they would "call the riot police." Umbrella were cut off with two songs to go and Holy Church didn't get to play at (sorry guys). Yet somehow we made more money at this gig than at any other we've played. It's all been downhill ever since.
