(Half a) Gig Review: The Riddim Method @ The Blue Mountain, Bristol, 08.07.06
Not half of a review, a review of half of a gig. I was dead on my feet by 3am so I missed DJ C, but I can tell you about what happened before then. Except for the first hour and a half. I missed that as well. So did I get my moneys worth (a fiver) out of the 3 ½ hours I did manage to see? Yes, indeed I did.
Catching half of Bruna's set I found varied sounds expertly mixed, but with such a small audience I worried for the sake of the night and felt really bad for her. Upstairs Punski was spinning records to an empty room! Visuals were very cyber/tech influenced but worked well when they were mostly on a black back ground and had a good interactive element from a camera the guy kept waving his arms at it comedy raver fashion. The crowd was picking up by the time Parasite and Ana Kissed played a set reminiscent of his/their radio shows (currently Goatlab Radio), with a range of breakcore, grime/dubstep*, a blistering barrage of gabba (although the sound system didn't do it justice), and full on metal mayhem ending with roaring vocals from anarchist606. Brilliant stuff.
* I've intentionally merged the terms here after the following conversation earlier in the evening: Parasite: "I've even got some Japanese dubstep to drop in!" Gutterbreakz: "Japanese dubstep? I've heard of Japanese grime but never Japanese dubstep!" Parasite: "Grime, dubstep, yeah whatever." Accompanied by classic Jewish mother shrug. Sorry, Nick, most of us still can't tell the difference.
Kid Kameleon was next up, playing a slightly slower set that includes some classic 50s (or 50s influences) doo-wop tunes along with the grime/dub-step, hip-hop and mash-up etc. The huge BPM range appeared to make the mixing challenging in places but all in it was an entertaining and in a way thought provoking set. An hour flew by before Ripley seamlessly took to the desks and carried on where he left off. (Both also dropped into some laptop tunes along with the vinyl btw.) Ripley's set was, as always expected, absolutely sick. Also merging breakcore, hip-hop and jungle, she does so with a fluidity rarely seen in the electronic scene. Everything flows together so beautifully you'd think all the tracks were always suppose to fit together like that. It really is a wonder to see and hear. Unfortunately by this time my age was showing and I had to bail out, although I'm assured DJ C's set was at least on par with Ripley's if not the highlight of the evening. Oh well, maybe next time.
