Gig Review: Leafcutter John, MAIOF & Team Brick @ The Cube, Bristol, 18.11.06

'Happenings and Killings' is a new night Joe Volk has set up at The Cube. This was the first one and was a great success. Punksi DJed in the bar all night. (I notice from the new Bash Out flyers that he has stopped using Clean Cut as the affiliation after his name and started using Mike Patton's Ipecac label. I'm intrigued to know what he's got up his sleeves there. Nice one, Ed.) Team Brick provided the opening live set. It was another of Matt's looping delay / feedback building noise sets although it didn't flow as well as it could have done and more vocals would have been nice but a good opening none the less. Anton MAIOF debuted the My Ambulance Is On Fire Big Band, adding a drummer and a second guitarist to his vocals and own screeching guitars. They played tracks from his forthcoming 100 Love Songs album, building perfectly to a massive roaring closing crescendo. Leafcutter John has just come back from a 12 date European tour with two of the contributors to his The Forrest and The Sea album. This was the last night Leo Chadburn would be providing his baritone backing vocals and tudor bass recorder before disappearing off to appear in a play. Alice Grant also provided backing vocals as well as various other bits and pieces (blowing air into water, a music box, a slinky spring, having a cold etc.) Most of the album was performed, all of it brilliantly, and left with five minutes to fill and calls for an encore they provided an improvised singing piece, inspired by Shaking Stevens' Green Door, that was spontaneous and hilarious. For my money that close was the highlight of the night.
