Interesting. But am I right about them having something strangely Stylophone-esque about them, or was teat just the one example I heard? ##~~--(^ u ^)¬y

Yeah, I listened to one or two, but I've heard them before. I've even had a go on one (easier to get a sound out of than bagpipes, but harder to actually play a tune) an old teacher of mine used to play them. Damn difficult, you have to have one arm making sure there's enought air in the bag, the other making sure the air leaves the bag at the right time, then your fingers making sure the air coming out makes the right noise, and alot of players sing at the same time!
I'd rather play something with at least one button marked "samba" and one marked "polka" (^_^)

One World on Radio 1 tonight (Midnight – 2am) will feature “Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, Drexciyan DJ Stingray, Andrea Parker and Mira Calix live from this year's All Tomorrow's Parties festival.” Should be good!

Thanks Popcorn, so I did remember the name correctly! Did you listen to any of them?

Yeah, I know Northumbrian pipes. You have the bag (a la bagpipes) under one arm and a set of bellows under the other joined by a small pipe at the waist. You actually have to strap your arm to the bellows so you can control the sucking. Because the two arms of the player are having to work at different times and rates, the player often resembles a demented Scotish chicken who's into a bit of S&M on the side.
I'll get my googling hat on and see what I can dig up.

I heard a piece on the Today programme on Radio 4 yesterday morning about some old variant on Bag Pipes (the musical instrument not the sexual act). I think it was called the Northumberland Pipes, but I can't quite remember. What I do remember is that the thing sounded strangely like a cacophony of god knows how many stylophones!!! I can't find a stream of the piece to link to, but if anyone else is so inclined, you wont regret tracking down some audio of these things! But you'll probably only play it once. Anyway, I'll continue my search and you'll see it here first if I find anything....
