Aside from a few Basic programming experiments in my youth I never really took a huge interest in game design until I read Steven Johnson’s Emergence. Now Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman’s new book, Rules of Play: Game Design Fundamentals seems like it could drag the geek out of me again. This Guardian article explains why it is already being hailed as a classic.
Mil "Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About" Millington talks about technology.
The domain name system that underpins the internet could soon reach out to telephones and objects. (RFID tags get dressed up again.)
Forget 'Pop Idol' and music moguls. A shoestring indie label offers the best chance of platinum fame. (Using a pretty liberal definition of indie, e.g. XL & V2)

Political correctness takes another step into the ridiculous. Technology firms supplying Los Angeles County with hardware have been asked to avoid using the words "master" and "slave" to describe their products. I imagine the GIMP will be the next for the boot (see what I did there?)
P.S. Thanks Popcorn.

Dan: I pods dirty secret is that the batteries can last as little as 18mths before dying, they're not replaceable. People are understandably pissed.

Europe puts France up for reactor. Leaders have chosen France as the possible European site for a new a new experimental nuclear fusion reactor. A final round of voting next month will decide on the final world site. (Interesting, whilst the UK has backed France, the US has backed Japan.) "Iter (International Thermonuclear Energy Reactor) will be the world's largest international cooperative R&D project next to the International Space Station", will cost $5bn, and in ten years time should lead to the construction of a commercial reactor. "In a fusion reaction, energy is produced when light atoms are fused together to form heavier atoms." Of course, that means light weight atoms not atoms of light cus there's no such thing.

Dedbeat 4 is "in the post" for 23rd-25th April 2004 (and there's a Q'Bert show in London on December 11th for anyone who can make it). Also very funky new site.
Mario 3 played in 11 minutes I-Pod's Dirty Secret. I can't get this link to work but I'm interested to know what's on it. Anyone?

Strong DVD sales may lead to a whole new series of Family Guy being produced. Talks with Fox are currently underway and the direct-to-DVD movie project is still a possibility. Rejoice! Optimus Prime is a Jew?

French president carries signed picture of Blair’s three year old son. But why!? And was it singed in crayon?
An American woman has been left with a British accent after having a stroke. Let just hope for her sake it’s not from the Dick Van Dyke school of Australian/Cockney "cor blimmy guv'nor, ows 'bout me fist int ur face" accents adopted by many Americans who have no real idea how we speak. For another criminal example see Elijah Wood’s performance in the Disney made for TV version of Oliver Twist
Results are in for the Today programmes Britain at 6am photo contest. See the winner and the 11 runners up here.

If you haven’t already browsed the brilliant eBay oddity site Who Would Buy That I highly recommend it, although be warned that some of their links may be frowned upon if viewed in the work place. But without it, how would you find out about the customised ferret greetings cards (that’s cards featuring ferrets, not cards for your ferret, but then, what’s to stop you giving a ferret card to your ferret?)available from Tiny Prints Ferrets.

Just a heads up for those who haven't seen Little Britain* on BBC Three, it's starting on BBC 2 next Mon @ 10pm.
Worth watching just for Matt Lucas' Vicky Pollard. Acording to the program she's from Darkly Noone, but she's blatantly a Bristolian, and I swear she was in my form group at school.

Gig Report: Doormouse, Gusset, Parasite, Sheriff Rosco @The Take 5 Café, Bristol, 20.11.03
Believe it or not we're not self obsessed enough to write a review of our own gig, but if anyone else who was there would like to send us a few words about it, please do so and we'll edit it down to just the nice bits and chuck it up here. Cheers. In the mean time, here are some photos to either jog your memory or to show you what you missed (tut tut):
