New Ani DiFranco album, 'Educated Guess', out now. "On it, Ani not only plays all the instruments and provides the lead and backing vocals, but for the first time in her career she singlehandedly did all the recording and mixing ... recorded on vintage reel-to-reel equipment ... deliberately restricting herself to 8 tracks of audio and happy to incorporate such accidental accompaniment as falling rain and passing trains." Any chance of a review Dash?
Helmut Newton has died. Check out some of his photography at IOnOne, his books at Photogybooks and this little bio at the Directory of Notable Photographers. And some other weird and wonderful places Google has found for me in the process like the High Heel Shoe Museum and unrealated to Newton, but interesting anyway, here's a domintarix's Live Journal (NSFW!)

We were just driving home from a morning out shopping when I into a bit of an embarrassing boy-racer over taking maneuver. Not something I'm proud of. I don't like forcing people to change lanes to let me past, but I was in a bit of a hurry for a dentist appointment. Anyway, as we drove past the Land Rover I'd forced to change lane Amanda points out from her passenger seat view point "there’s a child on board there… and its Phillipa Fucking Forrester!" I looked across as I over took, and sure enough, it fucking was Phillpa Forrester! I briefly considered crashing into her as an excuse to exchange addreses but decided it wasn't the best idea I had ever had, especially with Amanda in the car at the time. And after over-taking her I'd now lost my chance to follow her home. Bollocks. Now we'll never know what could have been...

Happy New Year to our Chinese readers reader. There are a lot of parties going on in across Chinatowns across the world (as well as in China obviously). Unfortunately there isn’t a Chinatown here in Bristol, another thing I miss about Manchester, so at least cook yourself some Chinese food. On Sunday the Scots will be celebrating Burns night. I just use it as an excuse to eat Haggis, which I love, it's easy to get down south this time of year. There is a very informative section on the associated rituals here as well as some nice recipes.

Some time ago, the BBC revealed a list of '50 Things To Do Before You Die' as voted for by the great British mass-ness. Full of uninspiring piffle like 'Go for a balloon ride' and 'Take the kids on a sickening plane ride to Disney World', I was disappointed with the results. I felt it lacked the sort of things that really enrich our lives.
I made my own list.

I've only just found out about Areogel, an amazing material. It's solid but only has 3 times the density of air, has stupid thermodynamic properties, does odd things with light and sound, and can withstand all sorts of forces. It's also funny that it was created in 1931 as a bet and olny realy rediscovered about 40 years later, after scientist had ben trying to make something with the same properties for years.
I can't find the video the article talks about on NASA's site but I was shocked by the main site having a very film sequel like [insert audio clip of Jerry Springer audience whooping and shouting "U.S.A.! U.S.A.!"] "M2K4 - we're back!" mission to Mars flash presentation plastered across it already

For anyone with any interest in Emergence: Blood on the virtual carpet: tempers flare as 'editor' is thrown out of online town. "Professor Ludlow and a growing band of academics and sympathisers believe, however, is that his efforts to publicise the tawdry fantasy activities of real-life teenagers were becoming simply too uncomfortable for Electronic Arts to stomach."
