Royal Festival Hall, Fri 12 Mar 2004 7:30 pm: Squarepusher (Live) and James Lidell (Live) plus music from Georges Antheil, Aphex Twin, John Cage, Steve Reich and Edgard Varèse. Indecently, the new Squarepusher album, Ultravisitor, due out on March 8, is available from today for pre-oder from WarpMart. All Warpmart orders will be shipped with a 3" CD containing 5 exclusive tracks and artwork by Tom Jenkinson himself.
There is a Guardian article here about the famous picture of the Smiths outside Salford Lads Club. The club wasn’t happy about the association to start with, but after years of having fans hanging around outside looking miserable has somehow come round to the idea and has now even opened up a special Smiths room for fans to pay tribute in. Here's my contribution.

Thanks to Bob Kerr, you can now borrow OpenOffice from 80% of Scottish Libraries. This quote from the article concerns me: "Most UK schools have a licensing agreement, where they pay an annual fee of around £28 per computer to use Microsoft Windows and Office. However, Microsoft levies the charge on all computers owned by a school - even those that might be running Linux. This gives some schools less of an incentive to try open source." Diver flees with shark attached I saw a picture of this guy with the (admittedly small) shark hanging off his leg on TV this morning. Unfortunately I can't find the picture online anywhere, if anyone can find it please chuck it in the comments. Reminds me of a horrendous joke I was told yesterday. Short version goes like this: Two sharks in the sea. One says to the other, "you know, I’m really, really bored of fish." The other shark says, "OK, let's go to Morecombe Bay and pick up a Chinese then."
Sorry.

Want to buy tamper proof screws? Try the Tamper Proof Screw Company. Or just by the screw driver for someone else's tamper proof screw. They even do custom one offs, I might buy some special gusset screws for... umm... for... maybe its not worth it actually.

I've not really come across much of interest today (except perhaps this FAQ about English words from AskOxford via Grom) so a quick troll of the beeb site produced the following:
DVD release for original Star Wars trilogy No mention of whether this is the original original trilogy or the special addition bastardisation.
Some beautifully high contrast black and white photography by Daido Moriyama
"The original [Pac-Man] arcade machine is now exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, while some of the generation who grew up playing with Pac now, like their rotund hero, spend most of their time munching pills while listening to repetitive music." Hmm.
Ofcom raps TOTP over 'bondage' Damn this link for turning out to be about a boy band. Although, it probably wouldn't have even made the news if it was about a girl band, it seems to be perfectly acceptable to see women in quasi-BDSM roles on primetime TV, which is a good thing for perverts like me and why I watch Top of the Pops after all.

Jim Bob (ex Carter USM front man, as I'm sure he's keen not to be known) is touring the UK in May. Bristol is the first date and you can see the full schedule on this WTDN thread. He will be playing acoustic versions of his solo material (Jim's Super Stereoworld and James Robert Morrison) as well as Carter classics ("I can play any of them. A bit like Sir Paul MaCartney. I'm a bit like him. Even though he looks more like Fruitbat") and will be selling advanced copies of his book of Carter touring anecdotes. Ridiculous Carter lyrics thread from somewhere to get you in the mood.

Vic and Bob are selecting the archive performances for Top of the Pops 2 all this week. If last nights show was anything to go by this is well worth watching. They then return to our screens on Sunday on BBC3 (10pm) with Catterick. "The story of brothers Carl and Chris who haven't seen each other for 15 years but reunite in a desperate mission to find Carl's estranged son. That mission soon becomes a journey from hell when encounters with dodgy villains, the police and a hotel proprietor who is missing a vital piece of his anatomy, mean that things do not go exactly to plan."

The phenomenon of hikikomori: "The word means simply social withdrawal and, in its early stages at least, the condition is as banal as a teenage sulk ... True social withdrawal is not just a passing phase. The most extreme case known ... is a man of 53 who has been living in his room for 30 years." Apparently a uniquely Japanese phenomenon but I think you'll find examples of this everywhere, albeit on a smaller scale. (Thanks Hsiao)
