"Bristol is at the vanguard of intelligent environments and location-based services"
Interesting new video rental idea. Although the claim that "Whenever you're in the mood for a film, just choose a title from this stack of DVDs and pop it in your player. You can't get much more "on-demand" than that" is a little much for a postage based service.

Zombie movies seem to be the flavour of the month (The Dawn of the Dead remake that's just out, Shawn of the Dead due for release anytime soon). With in mind I thought I'd let you know that the copyright on Night of the Living Dead has run out. Some kind soul has put it up on archive.org so now you can download or stream it. While you're there have a look around and say goodbye to your bandwidth.........

The Japanese Knife Company "...Artisan Collection is currently the only commercially available range of knives that are completely hand made, using techniques developed over centuries by Samurai craftsmen. ... Two layers of soft Stainless Steel (SUS-405) are used to clad a central layer of 'High Speed Steel'' (SRS-15) a material rich in carbon and so hard that it is generally reserved only for the manufacture of precision tools, surgical equipment and dentist drills." Zirconium Ceramic: "With appropriate care and use these revolutionary culinary implements can maintain their spectacularly keen edge for years without needing to be sharpened. The primary component is Zirconium, a material second in hardness only to diamond, that was originally developed to tile the exterior of the space shuttle" Maki Sushi Recipe

Following Grom's Bizarre USB Goodies post yesterday I was thinking about how it's possible to power pretty much anything from USB, and this led me to a startling discovery. If you could make a USB powered laptop would could daisy chain several of them together, finally linking the last in the line back to the first and create an independent self powered laptop cluster. I'm filing a patent quick as this is as big a breakthrough as perpetual motion. Think of the possibilities; cities could be lit up with laptop displays, solar panels could harvest this light so we would have a clean, renewable energy source that isn't variable according to the time of day (like the sun) or the weather (like wind). By connecting enough together all of the worlds energy needs could be met forever. Unless laptops are made out of fossil fuels or something?

Now I do keep an ear to all things Dr Who related and I usually listen to Today on Radio 4 as I drive to work, but I missed this gem last September: "BBC Radio 4's Today programme featured Clayton Hickman (DWM) and John Little (The Standard) chatting to John Humphries and Sarah Montague; during the conversation Clayton mentioned that Russell T. Davies's favourite for the role would be actor Bill Nighy" Clay on Radio 4, nice one mate!

Via Float: 13th-16th May - Venn Festival, Stokes Croft, Bristol "Venn maps the process of mix and matching bands and performers from a wildly different set of sounds. These musical showstoppers highlight the current musical fluxus: the sounds of urban anthems, loose rural hymns, post-industrial dub, lo slung punk, rough and ready hip hop, loin tingling rock, distressed folk and psyched electronix and we all get some acoustic loving. All presented for enjoyment in the manner of an anything goes mix of clubs, gigs, sessions and screenings. Confirmed acts include Jah Wobble, Oxbow, Leafcutter John, Devendra Banhart, Janek Schaeffer, Alasdair Roberts & many more...check www.vennfestival.com for ticketing & updates" Note that there is nothing up on the vennfestival site yet!
The Cube is hosting VENN Version 1 on April 10th, 8pm, £2. "2 rooms, 1 sound, 2 versions, dancers, multiple images, dj's....A overlapping PARTY to unoffically kick start, raise funs (sic) for the VENN project...A Four Day Music Rally taking place in MAY, 2004 on the almighty STOKES CROFT."
