Munich's plans to go Open Source could fall foul of European laws of software patents... or it could help to over throw them

A very sad end: Lifelong Love Affair With Music Ends At Age 35 [from The Onion]
It literally depressed me reading that.
The absolutely fucking huge thunderstorm, the near black sky and being stuck in an office running on diesel generators might have something to do with it as well.

I've loved the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band since the day I found an old cassette copy of Gorilla (b/w Dark Side of the Moon) in my parent's record collection when I was about 10. It was only later I realised the connections between the band and the Python team (listen to Neil Innes' songs on Monty Python Live at Dury Lane), great pop songs like The Urban Spaceman, and... er... Puddle Lane. In my opinion everybody should have a copy of the Bonzo's Chronology in their record collection.

So I sat down to watch the Bonzo front man documentary Vivian Stanshall: Inside the Canyons of his Mind on BBC2 last Friday, only to discover a link previously unknown to me between the great man and one of my favourite Bristolian venues; The Thekla. Viv (as I like to call him), or at least his then wife, Ki Longfellow-Stanshall, was responsible for buying the Thekla in Sunderland, where it had been rotting for seven years, then sailing it to Bristol and converting it into a theatre. It was rechristened The Old Profanity Showboat and staged all manner of bizarre performances and installations from up and coming artists in the early '80s. There is a more detailed history, although it's difficult to follow the dates of events, at the official Ginger Geezer site, which is maintained by Viv and Ki's daughter Silky Longfellow-Stanshall. Amazingly, I can find no reference to this beginning on the official Thekla web site.

Staying on the subject of the Thekla, the present owners are understandably annoyed about an act of "vandalism" committed by Bristol City Council, who painted over the Bansky tag on the side of the boat last year without asking permission. The Thekla saw it as art, the council saw it as unwanted graffiti, but who's the real vandal if the owner wanted it there?
