John Peel
Don't forget it's Radio 1's John Peel tribute, Keep it Peel, tonight, from 7 pm until 1 am. It kicks off with a documentary about his life, is followed by live performances by some of his favorite bands, and then closed by some of his favorite DJs. In particular look out for a half hour slot from Mike P (µ-ziq), Henry Shitmat and DJ Broken Yolk. Sending one of today's musician's greatest inspirations out in style!

eBay RSS feeds
This is a bit of an experiment. A dangerous one at that. I've used FreeBiddingTools to set up a series of rss feeds for eBay searches I do regularly, and then fed those into Kinja to create a digest of things I might like to spend all my money on. I'll report back on how it affects my spending. It really would be more handy if FreeBiddingTools had slightly more detailed search parameters. Geographic ones for a start. This eBay category list is handy too, especially if you want to search for Doormouse and not get a fist full of porcelain figurines in your face. (Music is #11233 and covers almost everything I want) More Useful Information for eBay users here

Croc Bite
I got a nasty little nip from a croc over the weekend. I was rooting around the boot of the wife's mini, which I was trying to jump start, and the little bastard somehow clamped onto the palm of my hand. Croc clips can be dangerous kids.

Guitar Solos
I can't remember the last time I picked up my guitar, and I've never been into soloing (partially because I always thought it was an unnecessary self indulgence, partly because I'm no good at it) but I stumbled upon this list yesterday and it really made me want to go and listen to some of this stuff again. 100 Greatest Rock Guitar Solos

Sky Orchestra
"The Sky Orchestra is an ongoing research project that explores how one can perceive an artistic experience while asleep. It is an experimental artwork bringing together performance and music to create visual audio installations within the air and within the mind. Sky Orchestra are developing music specifically for sleeping people which is delivered out of the sky. Seven hot air balloons, each with speakers attached, take off at dawn to fly across a city. Each balloon plays a different element of the musical score creating a massive audio landscape. "Like whales calling in the ocean, the same sounds may be heard in quick succession passing from one balloon to another across the sky ..." Many hundreds of people experience the Sky Orchestra event live as the balloons fly over their homes at dawn. The airborne project is both a vast spectacular performance as well as an intimate, personal experience. The music is audible, both consciously and subconsciously, to all those in the balloon’s flight paths." I'd like to hear this. Growing up in south Bristol, close to Ashton Court, I was frequently woken on summer mornings by hot air balloon burners. I wonder whether that is part of the performance here or if the music only works when the balloons are silent running? I image the subliminal part of the experience would be lost very quickly if a balloon starts loosing altitude. [via We Make Money Not Art]

Wax Works
Madame Tussauds wax works museum has put together quite an odd nativity scene. Including Kylie as an angel, Bush and Blair as wise men (tongues firmly in cheeks there I think), and Posh and Becks as Mary and Joseph. (Or as the Scotsman's calls them, "moderately talented free-kick-taker ... with long-suffering missus.")
Unfortunately, I heard on the radio this morning that the exhibit has been attacked and has since been shut down. Does nobody have a sense of humour any more?

Kubrick
Haven't posted a Kubrick link for ages. This little gem via LMG. What Stanley didn't say "Six months after Stanley Kubrick died, a 'world exclusive' was published - a supposed last interview on the set of Eyes Wide Shut. Odd, thought Anthony Frewin, the director's long-time friend: this didn't sound like Kubrick. Was it a fake? Who was the author? He turns detective and follows the trail of a thoroughly shady character."

St Pauls
If you read Skip the Budgie you'll know this already. As dash is sans net access at the moment I'll point out that the story about how the street warden scheme in St Paul's (that he works for) is shutting down has now made the BBC news.

How we recognise faces I've always wondered why I'm so totally rubbish at recognising people. Now I know it's down to my anterior temporal cortex and my right fusiform gyrus. Not that that helps.
