Brita
Are Brita cartridges recyclable?
"All components of the Brita cartridge are recyclable. Cartridges returned to Brita will be returned to our own recycling plant in Germany where the component parts are separated and processed for secondary use. Cartridges can be returned via our Freepost address below: BRITA RECYCLING, FREEPOST NAT17876, Bicester, OX26 4BR."

Comment sent:
"You make your recycling information very difficult to find. The cartridge packaging does not include any recycling information. Although mentioned in the (kettle) manual the address is given on a different page. Although mentioned on the front page of your website the link takes you to an FAQ. The FAQ does not contain the words Recycle or Recycling, but does say Recyclable. This makes it difficult to search. Typing Recycle into your website search engine produces no results, although Recycling and Recyclable do. Better use of keywords, more direct linkage, and the full address being given in the relevant section of the product manual would all help encourage people to recycle. Or is that not your aim; is recycling more expensive?"

Awaiting reply.

Clothing Rights
In the current 'heatwave' the normal office no-shorts policy has, thankfully, been relaxed. However, I have to admire this kids lateral approach to the situation:

Boy wears skirt in short ban row

As Eddie Izzard says, we want equal clothes rights!

August Gig Cancelled
Hot on the heels of yesterdays gig announcements comes the news that one of them has been cancelled! I should have kept my mouth shut. STFU&Rave2 will not be happening in August. The two September gigs are still on and I'm trying to find an alternate date for hard.off who I was going to be doing at b2b with. Please get in touch if you can do anything between 9th and 19th August.

In more positive news, Asoltare has been added to the line up for the September 7th gig at Arc Bar! I've been trying to get him to Bristol for a gig in ages and I've finally done it. I love his stuff, as evidenced by my ravings about his album here. I've also spoken to the person pulling together the other room for the night and he now has Electric Kettle (Peace Off) confirmed. I'm really looking forward to this one!

Freecycle
"Molly", over at Freecycle Blog says:

"I've started this blog because I don't like waste. In fact, I hate waste. I eat potato peelings for breakfast. I make shoes for my daughter's dolls out of Mr.Kipling pie cases. I won't go on...I will.

"Basically, this is all stuff I don't want. I've got lots of double copies of stuff. And I own lots of nonsense ...

"All you have to do, if you see something you want, is put a comment on it. That's all. Then it's yours. You just e-mail me your address and then I'll post it to you. Don't worry, I'm not a psycho with a knife. You won't have to pay anything, not even postage. So, if you want something....you can have it. If you would like to post anything up here, let me know and I'll freecycle it for you. Happy freecycling. And I promise I won't share any details with anyone else."

It's a brilliant idea. Not only because Molly has sent me a lovely copy of 'The Iron Muse - A Panorama of Industrial Folk Music' but because I love the community aspect of it.

Of course it's not a new idea, freecycle.org has been running for years and there has been a Bristol freecycle group for two years. (In fact, I dug out the first draft I wrote of this post that I never got round to posting from a couple of years ago.)

The main website is quite U.S. centric but you can find groups here for Bristol, Gloucester, and Bath.

Annoyingly you have to join a bloody Yahoo group to even see the posts but I guess I'm just as guilty of using Google groups so I can't really complain. I just wish I could remember at least one of the Yahoo IDs I've set up in the past.

Being in the middle of a house move, I've been giving away quite a lot of stuff. Like these Goldfrapp slipcases I cleared out last week. (All gone now!)

So, with all these avenues for getting rid of stuff, I am now offering...

Free BBC Micro Model B Computer

TAKEN

Broken shift key (just needs gluing) and screws for top panel missing (keep prying fingers out!) Otherwise prefect working order. Lot's of add-ons installed, extended RAM (32k!) etc.

Free to whoever wants it as long as it goes to a good home!

Will deliver free to Bristol, Bath, North-Somerset or South-Glos areas. You can pick up from North Bristol (evenings or weekends) or Bath (office hours). Postage at cost anywhere else. (I'd guess postage would be about 8 or 9 quid based on the ones on eBay). Please email gussetatgmaildotcom if you are interested.

Naked BBC

Edit: Beeb taken by someone on the yahoo freecycle group. Thanks!

Comments
Sorry to make your lives more difficult, but I've had to turn Word Verification on following a deluge of comment spam this morning. I hope this doesn't dissuade the few commenters we have, all feedback is gratefully appreciated.

Bird Strikes
Following my Quiet Revolution post in June I received an email with the following links re the ongoing debate about whether wind turbines kill birds.

RSPB say wind farm 'hits eagle numbers'
Glass windows an 'indiscriminate' bird killer
"Also check out this debate, its quite amusing"

This started me wondering about whether fritting (Word Of The Day: a pattern created by printing onto the glass, often used for shading) could be of help with the window issue. A quick search gives me this set of guidelines. Apparently fritting doesn't help inside but can do if printed on the outside. More importantly, don't leave pot plants in windows and switch of lights a night. Easy.

Linda Boucher

Linda Boucher - flyer front, originally uploaded by gusset.

I mentioned that I would come back to my recommendations of Brighton based artists. Wondering along the sea front or around North Laine they are numerous, although a lot of them, to my mind, are over priced photographers.

Linda Boucher, 234 King's Rd Arches, is by far my favourite. I love her stylised painting; both portrait and shoe collections. As each piece is a one off she'll even do commissions at the same cost as the work she has on sell. And she’s very friendly too. I plan to throw some business her way once we're settled into the new house. In the mean time I recommend you take a look at her website.

Machines for Singing
Snippet [5MB MP3] from the World Architecture / Building Design podcast. Rowena Easton talks about making art from architecture with her Machines for Singing installation at Gardner Arts Centre in Brighton, created from the sub-audible noises of buildings, captured using seven accelerometers and one mic. It sounds great, but annoyingly it only ran for a week - over the weekend I was stuck in Brighton with nothing to do - and I knew nothing about it. Maybe I'm prone to over-reacting but it makes me feel slightly sick when I find out I've missed an opportunity like this. Hopefully it will run again somewhere sometime and I'll get another chance to experience it.

It's rare that my roles as acoustic consultant (work) and electronic musician (hobby) are so perfectly combined. Similarly I never found time on a trip to London to get to Harmonic Bridge and that ended yesterday. Bugger.

Gig News
For only the second time in Gusset history we now have three pending gigs booked at the same time. Usually one pending gig is the upper limit, three is practically a tour! Even if it is just of venues around Bristol all of which we've played before. I say "we", but I don't know if Spokesy will be around for these so they may be solo shows again.

The latest addition is the first of the new Goatlab nights at T2, Bristol, on Friday 29th September, along side The Servants of the Apocalyptic Goat Rave (aka Bong-Ra and Sickboy), Big Joan (Blood Red Sounds), DJ Floorclearer (Death$ucker), My Ambulance is on Fire (Noise Terminal One), Anakissed, Parasite, Ironside etc. £6 advanced, £7 on the door or £5 if you're in goat related fancy dress, what ever that is.

The night is intended to bring the experimental edge back into the breakcore scene. As such Gusset will be playing two sets; one of "traditional" breakcore and one, in the rear bar, of lap-topless cassette tape manipulation. Or maybe something else if I change my mind, but it’ll be different whatever it is.

The other nights, least you forget, are:

STFU&Rave2 @ the Black Swan on 12th August with Electric Kettle, Enduser, Noise Creator and Gusset vs Hard.off b2b in the main room, (hopefully) a massive dub-step line up upstairs, and Tzii among others in room three at the back; and

I'm co-promoting an as yet unnamed night @ the Arc Bar on 7th September. Split upstairs/downstairs, one room will be run by Joe of STFU&Rave and will be headlined by Doormouse, the other room will be run by yours truly and will probably feature Kiki.ill (M.Z.O.), Ebola, Chris Moss Acid, Parasite, A!k()n, Jilk, Scrubber Fox, and Gusset if I can slip a cheeky set in. (All v.tbc)
