SRoE recently mentioned bumping into Ulrich Schnauss when she was playing in London, which led me to check out his work. There's a selection of left over tracks, early versions and covers on his download page.

Sheikh over at failme has constructed a site to celebrate the life of Output Recordings. MP3s here. I especially like Luke Abbot's down-tempo circuit bending.

Tranquillity
Revolutionary way to measure 'rural tranquility' unveiled
The Campaign to Protect Rural England has unveiled "a revolutionary new way of measuring and mapping 'rural tranquility'" What's so revolutionary about it is not explained and no acoustic definitions or boundaries are given.

Interestingly visual influences seem to score higher than acoustic ones in their survey, although both are essential.

I'm not sure why different groups are all trying to do the same thing and I don’t know if they are making any effort to work together. I listened to some presentations on this topic from TRL and Bradford Uni at the Institute of Acoustics conference last week.

The EU Environmental Noise Directive (END) requires the identification and protection of tranquil areas, although no precise identification and assessment procedure exists. The 'Visual and Acoustic Factors Affecting the Assessment pf Tranquility' paper was interesting and answered some questions, whilst asking more. Clearly more research is needed here. The proposal for identifying tranquil areas were a lot more vague, and in the way they were presented heavily biased by the presenters personal opinion. In the questions session afterwards I asked him if he thought identifying these areas would encourage people to visit them and in turn would that affect their categorisation? He dodged the question by proposing bus schemes to get people to the areas(!) as clearly little thought seemed to have been given to it and he was more concerned about granting access than protecting them.

The final paper is yet to be published by Defra, but you can see the lead up to it here:
