:: Saturday, September 27, 2008 :: Freq'y Wrong Lab
I've teamed up with Freq and Wrong Music to pull together this fairly last minute gig so Hardoff would have a Bristol gig while he's in the UK in a couple of weeks.
Shitmat (Planet Mu / Wrong Music) Hardoff (V/Vm Test / Digital Vomit) Gusset (Death$ucker / Disco_r.dance) Parasite (Peace Off / Clash) Demon Cabbage (Wrong Music) & Tripledot
The Attic, Stokes Croft, Thursday 9th Oct Time: 9 - 1 £3
Other Gusset gigs coming up include at Oxfam benefit at The Farm in St Werburghs on Sat 15th Nov, Wrong Music at the Black Swan ("Wrong at the Swan"?) on Sat 29th Nov and maybe another Freq colab with Dev/Null at the Attic on Thurs 20th Nov (TBC). More news as I get it.
“Gusset, with Parasite, at one point puts Lily Allen’s ‘Smile’ through a rapid wash cycle and his faders-to-10 set closer is a thrilling jack hammering explosion of drum & bass and a highlight of the evening that sets the room properly dancing. “
This was actually a Gusset back-to-back with Parasite set so full credit to Armin too. I think that final track referred to was one of his selections. As I remember, it went something like this: Exillon – Acid Panda Laptop Death Parasite selection Alan Titmash – Ditch Pig Parasite selection The Teknoist & Scheme Boy - Leppers on Garys … vs Microphist – I Love Lily Allan (cranked up a bit)… vs Julie Andrews – The Lonely Goat Herd (cranked up a lot) Parasite selection Gusset – Gussetbusters (Ghost Busters theme mash-up) Parasite selection
So thanks to Jay, Jon, Mike, Ash, Dunc, Julie, Spokesy and Armin for their input there!
The Dop has hit me up with a meme. I'm always unsure about what to do with these. Fraser Lewry over at Blogjam would point out that this is "merely hapless blog sewage ... that makes my hopeless shitsack of a website look up-to-date."
On the other hand, I'm quite interested in the transfer of memes, the way ideas pass from generation to generation. The idea of memes themselves is a perfect example. Richard Dawkin's popularised the idea in The Selfish Gene, where they were used as a literary example of how collective memory is transferred in a way similar to biological genes (hence the cumbersome rhyme). He then stood back and watch from the sidelines as others ran with the idea, analysing everything from religion and folk music to humour and fashion from this perspective. There are now booksdedicated to meme theory itself.
This meme is not one of those ideas. It's one of the "fill in the blanks" exercises, no more interesting than a chain letter, which might tell the reader something about my personal life, or at least how I chose to present that in public. A useful exercise for you in armature psychoanalysis but represents nothing in terms of the study of the evolution of ideas.
Anyway, I digress. The meme says:
‘List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to’.
(Why seven?)
Some after less deliberation than was given to my opening gambit, here they are:
dEUS – The Architect from the album Vantage Point (V2) [see Goatlab Radioshow below] Everyone's favourite Belgian rock outfit mount a triumphant return with this disco enthused anthem to special geometry. Just look at these lyrics:
He said: "I won't throw myself from the pier I'm gonna go home and shut up for a year And when the year is over I'll reappear And have a solution"
I've reason to believe that what I find Is gonna change the face of humankind And all these years before, well I was blind That's my conclusion
Cause I'm the architect
And so he drew himself a pentagon Thinking it through a geodesic dome From the coast of Tahiti to the hills of Rome Step aside cause the man will take the Nobel Prize home
Now you show me The Streets or The Arctic Monkeys tackling issues like that. They can't think outside of their own heads or that of some chavvy street urchin. There's no way they would be writing songs about architects with egotistic designs on a Nobel Prize. This is the big picture. This is what it should be about.
Epic 80s prog rock ballad action here. It's like punk never happened. This popped-up on a charity shop find compilation tape Mrs P bought for the car and it's been stuck in my head for months now. I love the guitar sounds on it and the repeated refrains in teh lyrics, "do you remember...", "by the way...", "I never meant to break your heart." And that "dancing in stilletoes in the snow" image I referred to last week when Decal used the line as a song title.
Thanks to Brendon in the office who dug this classic out of his record bag and asked if I'd mind dusting it off (and ripping it to CD while I was at it). This is proto-new-beat from 1988. As the discogs reviewer states
“Not Electro, not EBM, not Acid, not House, but a bit of all of those and more: This is one of the first true Techno full length albums with a distinctive European sound. Of course, this has to be called a typical New Beat release, but it only shows how New Beat was an important predecessor for the european sort of Techno, Trance and Hardcore.”
The album is horribly dated but it's often refreshing to return to the source. I dropped into in a DJ set at the last Goatlab and it went down well. In fact, it wen't down better than most of the rest of it!
DJ Rainbow Ejaculation - Allmygaysarefriendsodetotheblueoysterrainbow [Maladroit Remix] (forthcoming on Cock Rock Disco / Death$ucker) [see Goatlab Radioshow below]
I crack up every time I hear this. The whole album is outragous but this is the stand out track. YMCA-breakcore. I opened the last Goatlab radio show with it, see below.
Stallio – The Future Sound of Retro from the Mash Smater Not Harder MP3 release on Bad Taste [see Goatlab Radioshow below]
Again, I also played this on the last radio show. Like Ronseal, this does exaclty what it says on the tin. Mash-ups that are cleaverly put together to show how songs can be constructed, rather than just speeding it up and whacking soem frantic beats on top. Brilliant remix work.
PJ Harvey – Grow Grow Grow from White Chalk (Island)
Haunting tune from what is probably Polly's must involving album. Here's a live video from the Colston Hall gig on teh day the album was released last year that I reviewed here. I didn't realise how long ago this was. The album has been on heavy rotation all that time. (Chatting with Lou Syntheme shortly afterwards I found out she was at the same gig. Dorset girls gotta stick together.)
Exillon – Darkassid from It's OK To Dance (Ad Noiseam)
Jay gave me a copy of this album when he played Goatlab in February. Along with The Doubful Guest, who also played that night, and Syntheme, who played in April, I've really got into acid again recently. I've picked this track as a favourtie as it reminds my so much of early Chemical Brothers, and where I wish they had developed on to.
I'm short of suggestions of people to pass this on to, but I'd like to know what Natali, Armin, 606, Skip and Ripley would pick.
1. DJ Rainbow Ejaculation - Allmygaysarefriendsodetotheblueoysterrainbow [Maladroit Remix] (Death$ucker/Cock Rock Disco) 2. dEUS - The Architect (Island) 3. I particularly like the above shot as it caught Lou (Syntheme)'s reaction to Dave (Toecutter)'s dick joke and she looks like she's about to spit beer everywhere.

:: Sunday, April 13, 2008 :: Goatlab @ The Croft, Fri 18 April 2008
Syntheme (Planet Mu / WeMe) Lou Wood make's her Bristol debut with her phenomenal fucky acid. If you liked the The Doubtful Guest's acid rinse out at the last Goatlab you don't want to miss this. Another Planet Mu newcomer shows us how it should be done. Rumours abound about her true identity. Want to know more? Come and see for yourself.
Toecutter (System Corrupt / V/VM) - Australia All the way from Australia, Toecutter is the original breakcore mentalist. And it's been a long time since he was last in Bristol. Having shared a house with Candi Hank in 99 and taken his name from the character in Mad Max, the desert sun must have got to him as he became the most frightening and original thing to mash it's way across musical styles in memory. Or is it just "Progressive Progressive Progrsv House"? Either way, he's a long way ahead of the rest of the game. With releases on System Corrupt, V/Vm Test, Digital Vomit, Bruchstellen, Mutant Sniper, and Death$ucker you know this must be quality.
General Disarray (Blunderphonics / Laptop Battle) Matt Jackson one of Bristol's most talented up-and-coming breakcore producers! He is also one half of the Blunderphonics crew, who have organised many a good night down at the legendary Black Swan. He beat Parasite in the first round of Laptop Battle 5 only to be knocked out in the final by house favorite Defazed. His music is raw and full of energy, and he has also been known to play his live set entirely from a game pad using Max/MSP! See for yourself:
1. Tanya Stevens - It's A Pity (Stivs Remix) 2. Atki2 - Mercury (Domestic) 3. Leafcutter John - Khom?s (Planet Mu) 4. Krumble - Time To Burn (Death$ucker) 5. Dizzy Rascal - I Love You 6. Portishead - Silence (Exillon RMX) (dub) 7. Jimmy Cliff - You Can Get It If You Really Want 8. Polar Bear - Your Eyes The Sea (Babel) 9. Stivs - Unknown (dub) 10. Michael J Rocks - Arp Midi Layers (dub) 11. Rob Smith ft. Wilks - Firewalk 12. Random Bit Generator - El Barrio (Hula Honeys)

Datach'i - I'm Not Afraid To Watch You Die (Planet Mu)
Frog Pocket - Heavy Grunts (Planet Mu)
Jimmy Soul - If You Want To Be Happy For The Rest of Your Life
Bogdan Raczynski - Lowlands (Rephlex)
Portishead - Machine Gun (ATP bootleg)
The Tuss - Shiz Ko E (Rephlex)
Lily Allen - Smile (acoustic)
Hot Roddy - Crust Mantle Hell (Wrong Music)
Phthalocyanine - Breakfast Beer (Planet Mu)
DJ Lumpy's Penis Song (title not known)
I was feeling ill for this one so it's a bit more downbeat this month. Sorry to Chris Cook (Hot Roddy) who I couldn't remember what other artist name he went by, as his Same Actor work eluded me temporarily.)
WoBcast Unplugged - The return of the West of Bastard podcasts with DJ Lumpy, Andrewherring and Juxtaposeur. Worth the download for The Bony King of Nowhere from Bagpuss, Maypole (the oldest song in the English language, as heard in the Wicker Man soundtrack) and Destroying Something Beautiful's beautifully fragile acoustic version of Word Up.
CERN Poscast Thanks to Bristle for pointing this out in the comments to the previous post. A chat-show style podcast of people visiting the CERN Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, including the likes of Dean of Guildford Cathedral the Very Reverend Victor Stock, comedians Kevin Eldon and Simon Munnery, and Torchwood / Shark Attack 3: Megalodon star John Barrowman. I think this is about as internet as it gets. Even the greatest of the surrealists never dreamt of shit like this.
If you're interested in what's going on with Addict Records (as I mentioned in the Goatlab radio show) have a listen to Meatsock's interviews with Dan Doormouse [70MB MP3] and Billy Stunt Rock [51MB MP] he recorded for the whus.org show.
NL35 - X&Trick - Planes, Trains and Highways X&Trick on top form presenting his unique blend of Drum ‘n’ Bass, Industrial, Hardcore and Breakcore with plenty of fantastically obscure noises, thick bass and dischordant synths. Introduced by a collaborative track with Chevron, “Brighton”, each track on the release is recorded in a different location around the world and named accordingly. Dark, hard hitting and at times definitely summarising the euro/belgium scene, the release is also quite diverse, with the more melodic starting track through to “Dubai”, which is reminiscent of an Evol Intent / Current Value style dark drum and bass, and then completed by the pounding techno of “Gent”
NL36 - Mully - Dalston 2066 A collection of delicate pieces constrasting Mully’s previously heard style of work, each track an amalgamation of flowing melody, micro-beats, and ambience. Many of the tracks have a warm, contemplative feel, though also with a melancholy vibe throughout. “Icelandia” and “Beach” are definite first listen favorites, with tracks like “She Will Lose” that take a few more listens to really appreciate.
The flyer for the Feb 15th Goatlab @ The Croft, Bristol is below. However, please note that The Doubtful Guest has unfortunately had to cancel. Flyers and posters had already been printed and we are awaiting confirmation from a replacement artist. News here when we get it. More information about who is playing on thegoatlab.com
I've also just agreed to play a one hour Death$ucker mash-up vs set with (against?) Hoonboy at New Born @ The Cooler on Park St, Bristol on Feb 28th. Finalised flyer to follow.

Knowing you are unlikely to be low on things to do over Christmas and the New Year I though playing a gig for your entertainment was just as likely to clash and interfere with you personal calendar as it was to compliment it. To overcome this problem I have whored myself liberally across as many gigs as possible this festive season. If your winter festivities are shy on Gusset, you may wish to consider attending one of the following. And if you are hardcore enough to attend all of them the sets will be different at each.

Mary Anne Hobbs had a live session from Amon Tobin this week and also played a dubplate of the forth coming Meat Beat Manifesto on Planet Mu (a match made in electronic music heaven!), which sounds like pumped up dubstep influenced versions opf the RUOK ...in Dub material. There's a tracklisting and links to a two part rar of the show here.

The GoatLab 3 gig last Friday went well. Well, went OK at least. My photos have been added to this Flickr set. (Also includes GoatLab 1 from September).
Once again I played so early in the evening there was no-one there at the start of it and when asked to extend it as the place filled up I dropped some of the early material in again. I don't think the recording is going to sound very good.
Hunting Lodge provided a hilarious does of guitar based noise. They were tight, their guitarist was good, their bassist kept trying to trash his base but forgot that it was attached to his neck, the vocals were unsurprisingly unintelligible, but their drummer made the band. Wielding nothing but two sticks, his underpants, and a sweaty hairy beer gut full of attitude, he stole the show. This is male bonding music. As long as the bonding consists of pushing and shoving, shouting and generally trying to intimidate and embarrass your mates.
Acrnym lived up to the sales pitch of sounding like "Venetian Snares on crack." At least, I'll buy that description, without having ever taken crack. His three quid CDR was a bargin too. Incidentally, I noticed a poster advertising the film Outlaw this morning. The quote from lads rag Nuts called it "Football Factory with guns!" Yeah, because any film can be improved by adding guns to it, can't it? At least it makes a change from the tired journalistic cliché of simply adding "...on drugs" to the end of everything. The above adage only proves that promoters are just as guilty of falling into the same literary hole.
Mad EP played a great, dark and heavy hip-hop influenced set. It seemed to throw people again, in the same way Milanese did at the same venue. What is it with Bristol breakcore fans and there 300bpm ears? Sometimes it's good to slow down now and again. Maybe just not slap band in the middle of the evening I guess.
Patric C / Candi Hank was one of the founders of the breakcore scene, back in the Digital Hardcore days, but someone I knew embarrassingly little about. His set showed he is still at the top of his game. It much harder (and with less Germanic rapping) than the example set I linked to last week. The most impressive thing about it was that huge chunks of it were played live out of a GP2x handheld Linux console (link) and an old Commodore Amiga running a tracker that was projected onto a giant screen. Best crowd reaction of the night too.
Jason Forrest played a thumping happy hardcore tinged DJ Donna Summer set, which seemed to keep everyone happy. I think would have preferred a live set of his own prog-rock influenced disco madness personally. The inclusion of the Beastie Boys Girls made me smile in particular. Like his DJ set I linked to here some of the material looses its intensity and starts to sound silly when played that fast. Am I getting old?
Ironside finished off with a one-deck Final Scratch DnB DJ set that was only marred by me rummaging through cables behind the booth and accidentally cutting his power. Sorry about that.
Unfortunately technical problems – failed sound system – in the back room means the eagerly anticipated 'Mrs P 7" Collection' DJ set didn't happen. I'll keep that for the next GoatLab on 4th May. Also playing at the next one will be Hecate*, Cdatakill, Soundbytes (of Prodigy mash-up fame), and Gareth Clark.
Let's hope having Hecate and Gusset on the same bill doesn't curse the night. We've been booked to play with Rachel twice in the past and both times the night has been cancelled. Really looking forward to actually seeing her live finally. Third time lucky, eh?
